About this video: Dancing on a Dry Salt Lake was photographed using the Varicam (720p 24fps) using FilmRec mode. The Patina V clip was photographed in color and converted into black and white in post production. It was also photographed entirely on the HAL robotic camera dolly built by my friend, Peter Jensen ( http://robotswithcameras.com ) . And it was photographed in entirely available light.
My key to getting these results with the Varicam is to use the FilmRec mode "dynamic level" adjustments to control the dynamic range recorded to capture the necessary highlights and shadows in the image. Post production color grading is used to finalize the image but I try to use the minimum dynamic range necessary to hold the image information. I shoot almost always on the daylight or tungsten presets in the camera menu and "paint" the image when desired usually using the RGB gain controls in the camera menu. Fine tuning of the color is then done in post production. I find that by using this method, I am able to capture the image in the most "film like" way without resorting to "Knee" adjustments which give a kind of electronic look to the image, especially in flesh tones and not clipping desired details.
